Hiking and tasting in Lamole in Chianti
The hike will begin in the wonderful medieval village of Lamole, located at an altitude of approximately 600 meters (1968 feet), overlooking the Greve river valley with its beautiful landscape. It is truly a small gem, as the town’s recognition as an Italian historical landscape attests. The title was bestowed in 2018 by the Ministry of Agricultural Policies. The village name seems to derive from the “blades” of land that make up the territory’s silhouette. The land’s productive potential was already recognized by the Etruscans, who were the first to introduce the cultivation of grapevines in this region, and by the Romans, who also brought olive trees to high land.
The quality of the earth that surrounds Lamole, part of the “Macigno del Chianti” (sandstone), lies in its high permeability, thanks to the presence of Alberese limestone and marl, a schist rich in manganese and iron that allows the roots of the grapevines to search deep underground for mineral-rich water. This mixture creates the ideal terroir for grapevines, giving birth to a Sangiovese rich in polyphenols that is capable of achieving peaks of great sophistication and longevity. It is a true example of wine heritage!
The cultivation of the giaggiolo, the Florentine iris, is also popular and characteristic of the area. the flower is grown both for its essence and for its application related to winemakingin the past, when it was customary to add iris powder during the wine ageing process to give it a mild note of violet. The loop hike that we will complete will allow us to discover the purest and most wild side of Chianti, an area that is not only made up of vineyards and olive groves, but filled with nature that remains untouched, growing in absolute freedom between forests and streams.
We will have lunch on the highest peak of the Chianti Mountains and conclude this experience with a tasting of some typical wines, produced by a winery that has dedicated itself to the land with passion and tenacity for five generations.
