Discovering Chianti Classico wine in Greve in Chianti

In September, Expo Chianti Classico 2025 takes place in Greve in Chianti, the wine festival dedicated to discovering the Chianti territory and Chianti Classico wine.

Over the long weekend from September 11th to 14th, the main square of Greve in Chianti will host
the key late-summer event Expo Chianti Classico 2025 for those who love or want to discover the Tuscan wine culture through Chianti Classico.

This year, the festival celebrates its 53rd edition and offers a packed calendar of Chianti Classico wine tastings, round tables, presentations, and many opportunities to learn more about the history and unique characteristics of the Chianti region and get to know the local wineries and winemakers of the “Terre del Gallo Nero” (Land of the Black Rooster).

In addition to the inauguration (Thursday 11 at 5:00 p.m., in Piazza Matteotti), among the most interesting events of the Chianti Classico exhibition, which brings together producers from all the municipalities of Chianti Classico, WeHike recommends not missing the following guided tastings:

We also recommend you don’t miss the performance on Sunday, September 14, at 4:30 p.m. in Piazza Matteotti with the historical group, musicians, ladies, and flag throwers of FIVIZZANO. Finally, during the Chianti Classico Expo, there will also be side events—exhibitions, guided tours, and walking excursions in Chianti—and WeHike will also be on track to spread the beauty of the Chianti Classico area with beautiful walks in the hills of Greve in Chianti. A full immersion in Chianti Classico between history and legends

With Expo Chianti Classico 2025, you can spend a long weekend in Greve in Chianti (ask us to organize a super weekend in Chianti for you), surrounded by the scents of the grape harvest and invigorating hill breezes.

A unique opportunity for a full immersion in the Lands of the Black Rooster, discovering the Chianti Classico wine whose date of birth can be traced back to 1716, when Grand Duke Cosimo III de’ Medici demarcated the first Chianti wine zone, known today precisely as Chianti Classico (but the separation from Chianti DOCG came only in 1996).

But what kind of wine is Chianti Classico?

The distinctive characteristics of this wine—which has been DOCG since 1984—are that it is made from at least 80% Sangiovese grapes with a maximum contribution of 20% from other red grape varieties (mainly Colorino, Malvasia Nera, Canaiolo, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot), grown at higher altitudes than Chianti DOCG and distributed across nine municipalities in the provinces of Siena and Florence.

Finally, Chianti Classico wine production is divided into three types: Annata, or standard wine, which ages for 12 months before being sold; Riserva, which must age for 24 months; and Gran Selezione, which has the longest aging requirement, 36 months.
