Winter Hiking in the Dolomites – Val Gardena

Our first day will begin with a snowshoe hike at the foot of the Odle Group. We will take the Col Raiser gondola up to the Seceda plateau at around 2,100 metres, before walking to the UNESCO Dolomites panoramic viewpoint, a spectacular natural terrace offering breathtaking views of some of the most iconic peaks in the Dolomites: the Sella Group, Sassolungo and Sassopiatto, Catinaccio and Sciliar.

We will then continue towards Alpe di Cisles, snowshoeing through snow-covered meadows and forests surrounded by an extraordinary natural amphitheatre, before reaching Rifugio Juac.

From here, we will continue our descent on snowshoes to Selva di Val Gardena, where we will stop for lunch in a traditional Alpine tavern. Afterwards, we will have time to enjoy the magical Christmas atmosphere of the local Christmas market, filled with the spicy scent of gingerbread and the unmistakable aroma of warm mulled wine.

In the morning, we will have time to relax and enjoy the hotel’s spa and heated swimming pool before heading out for an afternoon snowshoe hike on Monte Pana, just above Santa Cristina in Val Gardena.

We will follow the Pana Raida adventure trail, surrounded by majestic peaks and spectacular 360° views of Sassolungo and Sassopiatto, with snow-covered forests creating a beautiful contrast against the mountains. A magical winter landscape where nature, peace and relaxation come together.

At the end of our snowshoe hike, we will stop at a charming mountain hut for a well-deserved break and enjoy an aperitif overlooking the magnificent peaks of the Sella and Odle Groups.

We will set off directly from the hotel with our snowshoes, following a beautiful panoramic trail that will take us to the Church of San Giacomo, the oldest church in Val Gardena, whose origins are believed to date back to the 12th century.

Set in an idyllic location, the church features beautiful Gothic frescoes in the presbytery and 16th-century paintings depicting the legend of Saint James, the patron saint of hikers. Known in Ladin as “dlieja da Sacun”, the church and its scenic hilltop setting offer one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the entire Val Gardena.

We will then continue towards the picturesque Val d’Anna, near Ortisei, where we will stop for lunch at Baita Pauli, a small mountain hut where we can enjoy traditional South Tyrolean specialities.

After lunch, we will visit the Ortisei Christmas Market, where Christmas music fills the streets and traditional wooden stalls offer local products and festive treats.
