From food and wine tastings to hiking in nature, from markets to craft stores to the many medieval legacies, the Chianti of the province of Florence is a true immersion in beauty.
Medieval villages and Tuscan traditions, a winning mix
In the heart of Tuscany, Florentine Chianti encompasses some of the region’s most charming villages. Here, among hills covered with vineyards and olive groves, are places steeped in history and centuries-old traditions. Greve, Montefioralle and Panzano are true jewels that have come down to us in all their beauty since the Middle Ages, and preserve intact their atmospheres as if suspended in time. They also offer unique experiences for those who wish to discover the most authentic Tuscany in every season, even when the hills become white with snow. In this article, we will explore these three Chianti villages, including exciting attractions, traditions and paths to walk at a slow pace.
Greve in Chianti: the beating heart of tradition
Greve in Chianti is considered by many to be the “center” of Chianti, and it is no coincidence that the Chianti Classico Expo is held here in early September. But if Greve can be said to be the heart of Chianti, the heart of Greve is Piazza Matteotti, the town’s fulcrum and historic center of trade with at its center the statue of a great traveler, Giovanni da Verrazzano, who was born here. Framed by porticoes with stores, wine bars and cafes, the square, also known as the “mercatale” precisely because of its historical function, is home every Saturday morning to a town market where you can stock up on leather garments, handcrafted ceramics, fruit, vegetables and local produce. But Greve and its surroundings host interesting events throughout the year, from antiques to ceramics, from wine festivals to the festival dedicated to olive oil. Also not to be missed is the Wine Museum, a journey through the history and wine culture of Chianti. Finally, for those who love hiking, Greve in Chianti is an excellent base for discovering the trails that wind through the surrounding area. Montefioralle: a plunge into the past
Perched on a hill not far from Greve and with just a hundred inhabitants, Montefioralle is one of the most charming villages in Chianti, awarded the title of “Italy’s Most Beautiful Village” in 2022. With its cobbled streets, ancient walls, castle, towers and four gates leading in the direction of the cardinal points, Montefioralle is itself a true fortification although it was built on a monastic settlement (this is about the year 1000).
Montefioralle is also famous for, among other things, two important events: The Wines of the Castle, which takes place in May and is dedicated to Chianti wine and products, and Montefioralle Divino, the festival of Montefioralle winemakers (16 wineries), which takes place in September. Also not to be forgotten is the historic Sagra delle Frittelle (Festival of Pancakes ), which stems from a very old tradition: since the Renaissance, it was the custom of the families of the village to prepare rice pancakes for St. Joseph’s Day, and today, as then, the ancient recipe of the peasant housewives is respected.
Montefioralle is a small medieval enchantment that reserves an atmosphere suspended in time, a plunge into the history and tranquility of the Tuscan countryside. Explore tours dedicated to Montefioralle and its medieval magic.

Panzano in Chianti: the scenic village
Situated overlooking the Conca d’Oro, a valley full of vineyards, Panzano in Chianti is known for its breathtaking views and for being a favorite destination for lovers of wine and good food. Panzano’s notoriety is undoubtedly contributed to by Dario Cecchini, whose meats will give you a true taste of Tuscany, but passing through here is always a great opportunity to be tempted by local flavors and traditions.
Just a few minutes from the center of the village squeezed by medieval walls, the Pieve di San Leolino with its enchanting cloister is a must-see for lovers of art and architecture, while an “unmissable” event in Panzano is the Festa della Stagion Bona (the local name for the celebration of April 25), a historical reenactment and village event.
Originating in 1968, the event takes its cue from the feud between the Gherardini and Firidolfi families, and features alternating flag-waving parades, street performers, medieval games and other attractions along the streets of the historic village, culminating in fireworks and dancing in the square.
