Planning a day hike in Chianti? Before you hit the trails, you’ll probably find yourself staring at your backpack wondering: What should I bring? Am I packing too much? Will I forget something important? Don’t worry. Our guided hiking experiences in Chianti are designed to be enjoyable and accessible—not extreme mountain adventures. With the right essentials, you’ll be ready to explore Tuscany’s rolling hills, vineyards, and historic villages in complete comfort.

Day Hiking Essentials: What Every Backpack Should Include

Whether you’re joining a vineyard hike near Greve in Chianti or walking to the beautiful Abbey of Badia a Passignano, a few essentials should always come with you.

Start with a lightweight backpack (15–20 litres is more than enough) and make sure you pack:

  • At least 1.5 litres of water (more during the summer months)
  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses
  • A spare T-shirt
  • A small first-aid kit with plasters and basic pain relief
  • A fully charged smartphone for navigation and emergencies
  • An energy snack, such as nuts, dried fruit or a cereal bar

Many of our hiking experiences include a picnic or a wine tasting, but carrying a small snack is always a good idea, especially on longer walks.

What to Pack for Hiking in Chianti by Season

One of the best things about hiking in Tuscany is that every season offers a completely different landscape. Here’s how to adapt your backpack throughout the year.

Spring (March–May)

Spring is one of the most beautiful times to explore Chianti. Wildflowers bloom across the countryside, temperatures are mild, and the vineyards come back to life. Weather can change quickly, so bring: • A lightweight waterproof jacket • Breathable layers • Comfortable hiking shoes It’s also the perfect season to enjoy experiences like our Picnic Among the Irises, surrounded by Tuscany’s spectacular spring colours.

Summer (June–August)

Summer brings long sunny days and warm temperatures, making early morning hikes the most enjoyable option. Be sure to pack: • Lightweight, breathable clothing • A wide-brimmed hat or cap • High-SPF sunscreen • Extra water If you’re joining our Trekking & Rafting on the Elsa River experience, don’t forget: • Swimwear • A towel • A complete change of clothes

Autumn (September–November)

Many locals consider autumn the best season for hiking in Chianti. The vineyards turn golden and red, the air becomes cooler, and the grape harvest fills the countryside with unforgettable aromas. You’ll usually only need: • A fleece or light jumper • A waterproof jacket • Comfortable walking shoes Autumn is also the ideal time to experience activities such as our Truffle Hunting Adventure or the unique Rose Harvest Experience.

Winter (December–February)

Winter offers a quieter side of Chianti. Trails are peaceful, temperatures are cooler, and you’ll often have the landscape almost entirely to yourself. Pack: • Thermal layers • Waterproof hiking boots • Gloves • A warm hat As always, check the weather forecast before setting off—a simple habit that makes every hike more enjoyable, whatever the season.

Travel Light and Enjoy the Walk

After years of guiding visitors through the Chianti countryside, we’ve learned one simple truth: a heavy backpack is the quickest way to spoil a great day outdoors. You don’t need technical mountaineering equipment or an oversized trekking pack. Our hiking routes are suitable for most people with a reasonable level of fitness. All you really need is comfortable clothing, a few carefully chosen essentials, and a sense of curiosity.

We’ll take care of everything else: the route, an experienced local guide, fascinating stories about the region, and—quite often—some excellent Tuscan food and wine. Because in Chianti, walking well and eating well have always gone hand in hand.
