A 4-day trekking trip to discover the northern side of Lake Garda, among forests, waterfalls, rocky peaks, mountain pastures and medieval villages.

Garda Trentino is a true trekking paradise to explore with a backpack on your back and boots on your feet to experience a long and regenerating weekend.

Lake Garda, the largest lake in Italy, stretches between Lombardy, Trentino-Alto Adige and Veneto, and in its northernmost part concentrates some of its most precious wonders.

A true natural jewel of the Trentino region, the lake is at the centre of an ecosystem that will allow us to hike among trails and crystal-clear waters, rocky rises, dense forests and stunning views.

We will explore some of the most beautiful mountains that crown the shores of Alto Garda and places that are still little-travelled, such as Monte Brento and its scenic ridges.

This hiking trip will also be a voyage of discovery of the history of these places and their traditions, such as the food and wine that we will appreciate by visiting mountain huts.

An experiential journey not to be missed, under the banner of Hike & Taste!

Day 1 – Ancient road Valletta di S. Lucia – Castel Penede – Marmitte dei Giganti

Length: 7 km
Elevation gain: 300 m

After arriving and settling into the hotel in Nago, to oxygenate ourselves a bit from the journey we will take a walk along the Valletta di S. Lucia, the ancient road that connected the town of Nago to Torbole, for a first, close contact with the majestic Lake Garda. Crossing a small, silent valley and an ancient olive grove, we will hike along a path with one of the most beautiful views of the lake, a view that can reach as far as Sirmione on the opposite shore. We will pass under the Penede Castle of Nago, a medieval fortress now in ruins that once controlled the transit route between the Lagarina Valley and Lake Garda, to arrive on the shores of the lake and enjoy some relaxation. Finally we will ascend to Nago along the path leading to the Marmitte dei Giganti, a fascinating place consisting of large glacial pits created by stone erosion. Dinner at the hotel will follow.

Day 2 – Lake Tenno – Borgo Canale – San Pietro mountain hut

Length: 12 km
Elevation gain: 600 m

Our day will set off to discover a true natural beauty of Trentino, Lake Tenno. Situated at an altitude of 500 m and set in an intact alpine landscape, it is a true oasis of quiet, an enchanted place that thanks to its turquoise and transparent waters is also called “Blue Lake.” We will then continue towards the medieval village of Canale, included in the list of the “most beautiful villages in Italy”, and will hike through a magnificent forest to reach the San Pietro mountain hut, at an altitude of 1,000 m. Here we will have the opportunity to taste some delicious typical dishes, but above all we will enjoy a superb view of Lake Garda. On the way back, to end on a high note, we will visit the Cascata del Varone (Varone Waterfall), where the water from Lake Tenno falls thunderously for a good 90 metres!

Day 3 – Monte Brento – Tour of the scenic ridges – Ruins of S. Martino

Lenght: 15 km
Elevation gain: 700 m

On the third day, we will explore Mount Brento and its ridges on a fascinating loop hike. It is a mountain that is still little known and appreciated despite the extraordinary panorama it offers from the summit over the whole of Lake Garda and the Brenta Dolomites. To reach the summit of Mount Brento at an altitude of 1545 m and its scenic ridges, we will hike among pastures and dense forests of spruce and beech, and with a little luck we will have the extraordinary opportunity to spot roe deer, eagles and chamois. We will then have lunch at the Malga San Giovanni. On the way back, we will visit the archaeological area of San Martino: considered one of the oldest and most important fortified settlements in the Alps, it was set up by the Romans to stop the incursions of the ‘barbarians’. In fact, it is located on a rocky spur straddling the Upper Garda and the Giudicarie, and covers an area of more than 15,000 square meters!

Day 4 – Val di Ledro and Nino Pernici mountain hut

Lenght: 8 km
Elevation gain: 600 m

After checking out, we set off on our last loop hike along a magnificent panoramic route in Val di Ledro, a glacial valley in the Pre-Alps. On the shores of Lake Ledro, near the village of Molina, around 10,000 pile dwellings dating back to the Bronze Age were discovered in 1929, a site that has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011. These are the remains of ancient villages that had preserved pottery and bronze tools and statues, now collected in the Palafitte Museum. We will enjoy the more mountainous part of Val di Ledro, with its malghe and mountain huts. In fact we will reach the Nino Pernici mountain hut for a lunch stop and to enjoy a last, splendid view of the valley, Lake Garda and the Ledrensi Alps. We will then return to the cars for our departure.
