Seven days of pure adventure to discover the beautiful alpine landscapes of Stelvio National Park, in the heart of the Central Alps.
Tibetan bridges, waterfalls, perennial glaciers, mountain pastures, heavenly scenery and thousands of species of flowers and animals. This and much more in group trekking along the green valleys of the Park.
Established in 1935, Stelvio National Park is one of Italy’s oldest nature parks, and one of Europe’s largest high mountain nature reserves. Located on the border between the regions of Lombardy and Trentino-Alto Adige, this precious natural oasis has its heart in the Ortles-Cevedale mountain group, whose landscapes are a succession of impervious peaks and vast glacial areas. In fact, the park is home to the largest glacial area in the Central Alps.
With the daily hikes of our hiking trip we will discover the beauty of the Stelvio Park, and its enormous wealth of wildlife. We will hike through valleys with the most varied features crossing coniferous forests and green grasslands, until we reach imposing peaks at high altitudes to enjoy majestic views. We will also enjoy some relaxation at the Thermal Springs of Bormio.

SUNDAY, JULY 14 – Fonte Pliniana – Check-in hotel
Length: 5 km
Elevation gain: 190 m
Arriving in Bormio immediately after lunch, we will have a chance to get to know each other and oxygenate ourselves with our first easy group hike, which will take us to Fonte Pliniana, one of the 9 thermal springs within the Parco dei Bagni. From the spring, protected by an artificial cave built in the early 1900s, flows thermal water with anti-inflammatory properties and particularly suitable for internal cures (so we suggest you drink it in moderation). The entire out-and-back hike is surrounded by spectacular undergrowth of green larch trees. At the end of our hike, we will take the cars back to the village of Santa Caterina Valfurva, where we will stay for the entire trip. Check-in followed by dinner at the hotel.
MONDAY, JULY 15 – Forni Glacier – Tibetan Bridges
Lenght: 9 km
Elevation gain: 540 m
We will hike the High Glaciological Trail, also called the Tibetan Bridges Trail, to admire the peaks and glaciers of upper Valfurva from a vantage point. Realized in part in 1995 to commemorate the centenary of the founding of the Italian Glaciological Committee, the trail winds through the Forni Valley arriving at the sight of the vast front of the glacier of the same name, which we will admire “from below” (reaching almost 2600 m of altitude).
Here a Tibetan bridge over the Frodolfo stream will allow us to experience an exciting crossing suspended over the rushing water flowing from the glacier. The trail will also allow us to observe remnants of the First World War (1915-1918). Lunch break will be at the Branca Alpine mountain hut.
TUESDAY, JULY 16 – Val Zebrù – Monte Forcellino
Lenght: 8 km
Elevation gain: 1200 m
With this beautiful loop hike we will explore Val Zebrù, the heart and symbol of the Stelvio National Park. Its particular morphology, which determines the marked difference between the two slopes, the wealth of floristic species, the numerous ungulates and the presence of the bearded vulture and the golden eagle make it a must-see destination for nature lovers. We will reach the summit of Monte Forcellino (2842 m), where we will stop for a lunch break to admire the splendid view of the highest and most important peaks, as well as snowfields and glaciers of the Park. Our gaze will also reach Bormio, Valdidentro and Cima Piazzi. We will descend crossing vast meadows to reach the Campo mountain hut for a tasty snack.
WEDNESDAY, JULY 17 – Thermal Springs of Bormio
Lenght: 6 km
Elevation gain: 300 m
In the morning we will take a short hike and then engage in total relaxation at the Thermal Springs of Bormio. Free day.
THURSDAY, JULY 18 – Cima Bianca – Monte Vallecetta – Laghetti di Profa
Lenght: 9 km
Elevation gain: 700 m
At 3,000 meters above sea level, within the Stelvio National Park, a piece of paradise awaits us, which we will enjoy for the entire day. With the help of the cable car, we will hike to Cima Bianca, with its 3012 m, and the summit of Monte Vallecetta, at 3156 m, from which we will be able to admire the great areas of Valfurva, Bormiese and Livignasco. We will then descend along the Profa Valley where we will find a real naturalistic jewel: the Laghetti di Profa, whose stunningly colored waters evoke tropical panoramas. An alpine landscape capable of creating an authentic experience in the wildest nature.
FRIDAY, JULY 19 – Summit of Monte Confinale
Lenght: 13 km
Elevation gain: 1300 m
An out-and-back hike that will allow us to reach the highest peak of the entire hiking trip, the summit of Mount Confinale at 3370 m above sea level. The mountain lies roughly in the center of a giant set of mountains arranged in a horseshoe shape between Val Zebrù to the north, Val Cedec and Valle dei Forni to the east, and the main groove of Valfurva to the south. With our packed lunch break at the summit, we will enjoy 360-degree views of the highest and most famous peaks in the Rhaetian Alps: Bernina, Ortles, Gran Zebrù, Cevedale and Adamello, as well as the Forni Glacier.
SATURDAY, JULY 20: Val di Mello – Chiusa Waterfall
Lenght: 6 km
Elevation gain: 200 m
With our last hike of this wonderful journey, we will visit a real hiking gem, still little known but capable of giving intense emotions: Val di Mello, the largest nature reserve in Lombardy region. The valley floor is almost flat and will not require much effort to hike. Surrounded by waterfalls cascading left and right from the numerous side valleys, we will reach the Chiusa waterfall by climbing among large rocky boulders to the end of Val di Mello. We will have lunch at a mountain hut and then say goodbye and return home. Departure.
